Since the legalization of abortion in the USA since January 22, 1973 it is estimated that at least 57,762,169 unborn children have been aborted. That is, approximately 1.6 million children killed annually. Any right thinking person will agree that they were human beings with flesh and blood. Surely legalizing abortion promotes culture of death. Killing nearly 58 million unborn children is killing a whole nation. Similar stories can be said of several countries those legalized abortion.
There are individuals and groups advocating for legalizing abortion in Uganda. With the experience of other countries we need to study in depth the harm it can do to the society and individuals involved. First of all we need to document the profiles of the people who advocate this questionable bill. People should be made known what are their real intention, who is behind them and what are the so called merits they put forward.
Legalizing abortion overlooks the foundations of our society, culture and nation. Our nation has always been a God fearing and God loving country though it professes secularity. Life is valued by Uganda’s two major religions, Christianity and Islam. No one can deny the contribution made by Christian and Islamic thought that have always promoted a culture of life.
By legalizing abortion the legislature becomes insensitive to the religious and humane sentiments of ordinary people who value the culture of life. Our African culture and ethos always held in high esteem promotion of life and children. According to its belief life is sacred from the first moment of conception to natural death.
Besides religious values, abortion is inhumane and violates natural law. Giving many excuses and arguments in support of abortion does not justify the act. End does not justify the means. We need to counter act abortion with family life education, humane sexual ethics and build moral standards. Recently Pope Francis authorized Catholic Priests to absolve sins of abortion so as to heal the deep wounds caused by this. Legalizing abortion will cause deeper wounds in the society and individuals.
