Visitation: Mary and “Those Days”

MARY AND “THOSE DAYS”

Announciation 4IN THOSE DAYS MARY WENT IN HASTE TO THE HILL COUNTRY… TO VISIT ELIZABETH

Those days…. In haste… WHY? “Those days” were of what kind?

The exuberance of the Magnificat, the hymn of praise sung by Mary make us forget the background of the hymn and the situation Mary found herself in. Let us see what “those days” meant for her and why it made her to move in haste.

They were days of morning sickness…

They were days of confusion in mind and body…

They were days of anxiety and preoccupation…

They were days of fear and distress…

They were days of loneliness and seclusion…

They were days of questioning and soul searching…

They were days of eagerness for connection and companionship…

They were days of searching for meaning in God’s plan and vocation…

They were days of needing somewhere to go…

They were days of introspection…

They were days of needing to calm of the heart…

They were days of questioning God’s demands in life…

They were days of looking for a listening ear…

They were days of looking for good counsel…

They were days of seeking a spiritual direction…

They were days looking for the most needed hospitality for the body and soul…

They were days to meet people with similar minds and situations…

They were days looking for someone to sing with, the songs of new blessings…

Probably they were days to hide her pregnancy from the reproaching eyes at least for the time being and wait for more revelations from God…

…. No wonder Mary has to run in haste. Indeed in Elizabeth she found all that she wanted…

…. They both prepared themselves in prayerful wonder in preparing for their heavenly sons.
